Goal setting and Habit change are two key components to being the best version of yourself and having the life you have always dreamed of. By approaching goal setting along with habit change systematically and realistically we are more likely to be successful in reaching our desired state and maintaining change. Where a person runs into difficulty typically stems from trying to change too many things, too fast, and without proper planning. This can lead to unsustainable outcomes and cause a defeatist and why bother attitude.
In coaching, we follow the Smart Goal Guide which breaks down goal setting into the following components, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. Along with following this guide we explore a person’s current habits and combine the healthy behaviours you already have along with new habits that match your interest and lifestyle. We break the goals down into smaller simpler more achieving steps to help achieve the results you desire.
Goal Setting and Habit Change focuses on slight changes and transitions along the way, this is important because most of us have experienced times in our life when we were unable to follow through with a goal or sustain a change. The frequency of these experiences can cause a person to stop trying before they even begin. It’s not uncommon for a person who has experienced this to ask, “what’s going to be different this time”. It’s these beliefs and attitudes that can inhibit growth and keep you stuck in old patterns and behaviours that do not contribute to your overall well-being. By setting small goals and planning for potential or actual obstacles we can improve your overall success in achieving and maintaining the outcome you desire.
The big motivating factor for a person is when they realize they already have everything inside of them to be successful and all they need is a little guidance and encouragement to keep the momentum going forward instead of sliding backwards.
